Who is this for?
This adult screening tool is for people aged 18 and older with BMI below 35. Do not use it during pregnancy, with an eating disorder or suspected eating disorder, or when a growth condition affects your height. A hernia, abdominal swelling or fluid retention can distort waist measurements; seek individual guidance instead. If you are unsure whether this tool fits your situation, speak with a healthcare professional.
Measure at the correct location
Stand upright. Locate your lowest ribs and the top of your hip bones, then measure halfway between them. Keep the tape level and snug without compressing your skin. Read it after a normal breath out. Do not use your trouser size or pull your stomach in.
This measurement location differs from the upper hip measurement described in our RFM body fat calculator. Take a fresh measurement for this tool.
Understand the result
Ratio = waist ÷ height, using the same units. A ratio from 0.40 to below 0.50 is within the NICE healthy central adiposity band. From 0.50 to below 0.60 indicates increased central adiposity; 0.60 or higher indicates high central adiposity. Below 0.40 is outside these classification bands and is not a reason to keep reducing your waist.
The ratio screens abdominal fat distribution. It does not measure body fat percentage, diagnose disease, or determine your overall health. Increased results warrant a discussion with a healthcare professional. Interpret the unrounded ratio at category boundaries.
