WHAT IS COLD WATER IMMERSION?

Cold water immersion means putting part or most of the body into cold water, often as a post-exercise recovery practice.

WHAT IT MEANS

Cold water immersion includes practices such as a cold plunge or ice bath. Feeling less sore afterward does not necessarily mean muscles have recovered faster or that future performance will improve.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

An athlete might use a cold bath between competitions, where short-term recovery matters more than maximizing muscle growth from that day’s lifting.

IMPORTANT LIMITS

Repeated use immediately after resistance training may reduce gains in muscle size. It is an optional practice, not a recovery requirement; this definition is not a cold-plunge protocol.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Should every lifting workout end with a cold plunge?

No. Its value depends on the goal, and regular immediate post-lifting use may work against muscle growth.
