WHAT IS HEART RATE VARIABILITY (HRV)?

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is the small change in the time between one heartbeat and the next.

WHAT IT MEANS

Resting HRV readings from watches and other devices may help track how the body responds to training and everyday stress. Readings depend on the device, measurement conditions and the individual.

A PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

Comparing a series of morning readings with your own usual range is more useful than comparing one score with a friend’s.

IMPORTANT LIMITS

HRV is one piece of information, not a diagnosis or a stand-alone instruction to train harder or rest. Consider it alongside sleep, symptoms and how exercise feels.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is higher HRV always better?

No. A number needs context, and a single high or low reading does not establish recovery status.
