STEADFAST TRAINING GLOSSARY

A useful marker, with more than one definition.

What is lactate threshold?

Lactate threshold describes an exercise intensity identified from changes in blood lactate as workload increases. Blood lactate reflects the balance between its appearance and removal. A rising concentration shows that appearance is outpacing removal.

Think of a sink with an open tap and drain. The water level depends on both flows. This analogy describes the balance, not a literal reservoir of waste in your muscles. Research on lactate threshold testing explains the underlying curve.

Why it matters

A threshold test can help guide endurance training and track changes in the pace or power associated with a defined response. However, the term does not identify one universally agreed point. A review found many threshold concepts across the literature. Faude and colleagues review their validity.

Before comparing two results, ask the simplest useful question: did both tests define threshold in the same way?

First and second thresholds

LT1 commonly refers to the first sustained rise above baseline. LT2 describes a higher breakpoint associated with more pronounced accumulation. The precise criteria vary across testing systems. Neither label means your aerobic metabolism suddenly switches off.

Lactate itself is also a usable fuel. It moves between tissues and participates in normal metabolism, including when oxygen is available. Brooks explains this in lactate shuttle theory.

What to record with your result

A practical checklist for comparing tests
RecordWhy it belongs in your log
Threshold definitionWrite LT1, LT2, or the named calculation method.
Exercise modeKeep cycling results separate from running results.
Pace or powerRecord the workload associated with the threshold.
Protocol and dateKeep stage duration and testing conditions consistent where possible.

For example, a change from 140 to 160 watts at the same defined threshold is worth discussing with your coach. First check that the protocol and calculation method match. These numbers are illustrative, not performance targets.

Applying the information

A study of 48 trained male cyclists compared eight threshold methods and found differences between their repeatability and performance relationships. Its findings support naming the method; they do not establish one universal cutoff for every person or sport. Read the study.

Use the report to inform the purpose of individual sessions. Keep easy sessions, harder sessions, and recovery clearly identified in your plan. Ask the tester to translate any technical result into instructions you can actually follow.

Steadfast cue: A threshold number needs a definition, a unit, and a plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is lactate threshold always 4 mmol/L?

No. A fixed concentration is one testing convention. It should not be assumed to identify the same physiological boundary for everyone.

Is it the same as VO₂ max?

No. Threshold testing examines the response as workload increases. VO₂ max describes maximal oxygen uptake capacity.

Can my watch replace a blood lactate test?

A device estimate is not a blood measurement. Keep the method visible and avoid comparing estimates with laboratory results as though they were identical.

Do beginners need a lactate test?

A test is optional. Before booking one, identify what decision its result would change. A simple, consistent activity log may be sufficient for your current goals.
