STEADFAST TRAINING GLOSSARY

Definition

Essential amino acids are the nine amino acids the body cannot make in sufficient amounts and must obtain through the diet.

What it means

They are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Amino acids are the building blocks used to make proteins.

A practical example

A food providing adequate amounts of all nine is described as a complete protein. BCAAs refer to only three of the nine: leucine, isoleucine and valine. The labels therefore do not mean the same thing.

Putting it into practice

Before buying an amino acid supplement, review the protein already supplied by meals and any shakes. Essential describes a dietary requirement; it does not mean a separate supplement is essential. Individual nutrition planning should consider the whole diet.
