STEADFAST TRAINING GLOSSARY

Definition

Protein is a nutrient made from amino acids that the body uses to build and maintain tissues and produce many functional molecules, including enzymes.

What it means

Dietary protein can come from animal and plant foods. Total intake, the mix of sources and overall dietary adequacy matter. A protein powder is a convenient food supplement, not a requirement for strength training.

A practical example

At a meal, identify the main protein source before deciding whether a shake is needed. Examples include eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, tofu, beans or lentils, selected according to tolerance and preferences.

Putting it into practice

For adults over 40, connect protein planning to a consistent resistance training routine. Individual requirements vary with health, activity and other factors. Medical conditions that affect protein needs call for individualized guidance.
